Hello,
What book would you recommend to polish and prepare the mind to become a programmer?
I think these books are good:
1- SICP
2- How to Design Programs

Any idea welcomed.
Legacy systems handover

I'm a freelance developer and typically work for small businesses, either supporting their systems or writing new ones. Very often I'm the only "IT Guy" involved with the business, and they tend to rely very heavily upon me for guidance.

In 2016 I developed a Line-of-Business application (browser-based, ASP.Net WebForms with MySql d/b) for a business that employs around 20 staff with a further 120 or so contractors relying heavily upon them for work. The application meets their needs exactly, is very reliable and has (until last year) needed very little tweaking. More recently as the business has developed new features have been requested which have been added easily and very cost effectively. It's quite a complex system but designed to be highly expandable, with as much common code as possible. Right from the outset, the owners were wary of effectively putting their business in the hands of a single, (at the time) unknown individual consultant. However I'm now a trusted member of the team, proactively suggesting changes to the software and the business processes.

I'm now in my mid-sixties and winding down my commercial activities. This is the last of my major clients but I spend an average of 10 - 15 chargeable hours per month for them. I also typically spend 15 - 20 minutes a day just "keeping an eye" on the system; things like checking backups are still running, disk space is fine, and reviewing the system's logs. Errors are all emailed to me but most are related to user error rather than highlighting any system problem, although occasionally things do need urgent, responsive action. The dilemma now is how to hand over this rather static but largish system to a 3rd party who can take on responsibility for day-to-day support plus ongoing development? The client doesn't have massive sums of money to spend, has no wish / need to have the system redeveloped, and doesn't understand the technologies involved to discuss on equal terms any future support provider. I've tried a few times (including through these pages) to find someone to take it on; I had one suitable offer but the route of a single freelancer doesn't remove the "single point of failure" concern of the client (i.e. what happens if the support individual falls under the proverbial bus or - more likely - dies of covid?). True, although wishing to retire I'm not expecting to "go" anywhere soon, so I am there for now as a backup. I did find one small consulting company, conveniently only 10 miles from the client, and they were taking on one or two small developments as a way to familiarise with the system. However then Covid struck, the developments were cancelled, and the client told me that they "didn't really get on that well" with them.

There is some functional requirements documentation, all stuff like passwords, URLs, hosting accounts etc are gathered together and up-to-date, and the software is well structured and uses sensible naming conventions throughout, though is not heavily documented in code.

So the <strike>question is,</strike> questions are, how do contractors deal with the issue? How do you go about identifying service providers and assuring yourself they're competent? And how do you work with a new provider to get them up to speed?

Change & Release Management - legal, compliance or audit requirements

Has anyone some experience when it comes to change & release management and legal, compliance or audit requirements (country dependent)?

Can you share some of your legal (country dependent), compliance or audit requirements?

We already have a very basic directive from legal and compliance to follow but I am curious what other people do or don’t do.

By the way my goal is to have the leanest/simplest change & release process one can think of but still have an audit trail. Like create an issue tracking item (request of change) with required fields, status, workflow and linked work orders including linked stories. I already have it all planned out but I would like your input for comparison/improvements.

Discussion examples: what to do when the location of the data changes, shall we have sign-offs or not, do we need work orders, do we need linked stories, which fields are important/required etc.
Scrum and DevOps? Do you see the two contradicting each other?

In the process of practicing agile, the team will have multiple choices: Scrum, XP(Extreme Programming), Kanban, Crystal, Lean, SAFe, etc. The most popular agile development method is Scrum. Therefore, some stereotype it as that agile is Scrum, and implementing Agile is to practice the Scrum method.

Improving products has gradually become the glue that keeps the development team and the operation and maintenance team together. In this case, people are often tied to a dilemma: for team agile transition, Scrum or DevOps?

Anyone has any thoughts?

Unit testing

Hi
I am not sure what is the right forum to publish this in (here or in the C++ forum)
But I coudln't find any information about it too, which is odd.
Anyway, Unit testing in C++:

Since it is not as popular as unit testing in other high level languages, I need your recommendations and insights.
I have a lot of legacy code- I was just given a project to which I have to have covered by at least 70% unit tests.
I need to do a lot of refactoring. Different tools (mocking tools) offer different things and has different limitations. So it might be smarter to ask the people who have already done this and know better than I do - what do you use?
Is there a mocking tool (along with a supported testing framework) that can mock concrete classes, virtual, static and non static method, private methods, etc?

Thanks a lot for your help

Is there a UX guidelines regarding naming application shortcuts in Windows ?

( I hope my description is clear enough)

We allow installing major versions of our application in parallel (for example, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0)

For minor versions releases, we patch the current version (for example 1.1, 2.4, 3.2 ... ) and we rename the shortcuts (start menu and desktop) to reflect the minor version (for example, app 1.1, app 2.4 )

Question:
Is there a Microsoft UX guideline saying what behavior Windows application should do in that case ?

For example, the Visual Studio shortcut will only display the major version , but not the update number , for example "Visual Studio 2015" and not "Visual Studio 2015 Update 3"

Thanks.
Code coverage with TFS 2015

We are currently using TFS 2015 for our CI builds. We use the Microsoft unit testing framework that ships with VS 2015 to create our unit tests and we run these as part of our TFS 2015 build process.

We'd like to extend our unit testing to include code coverage. We can't use the VS 2015 / TFS 2015 code coverage tools as these require an enterprise licence and we only have a professional licence (although we would consider upgrading if necessary).

We're looking for a code coverage tool that we can hook into our TFS 2015 build and that produces meaningful output (e.g. coverage reports). If possible it would be good if the same tool integrated into the VS 2015 IDE to give real-time coverage.

All recommendations and suggestions welcome.
Does your development team do code review? Or do you wish you could? I’ve a few questions and would like your input.

A vendor has asked me to write a white paper about the barriers that developers encounter in doing code reviews – particularly in regard to getting their managers to care about doing them, or how to sell the boss on adding it to the development process. (Although it’s sponsored, this is written for techies, not a commercial for the vendor… whom I won’t even mention here.)

That is: I plan to write a genuinely-useful document that you want to read all the way through. It might be titled, "7 ways to sell the boss on doing code reviews," or something akin to that.

So here’s my two questions:

•	What one thing, ONE THING, do you wish the boss (or powers that be) understood about code review?
•	Why did you choose THAT as the one thing to wish for?

Nobody is being quoted here. The closest I might get is to refer to someone indirectly to give the information credibility, something like, “Kim, a programmer at a Midwest insurance company, told me about about the time when….” So you can speak openly (and privately if you’re more comfortable). Though I suspect that this might spark a conversation that’d benefit everybody, so don’t be shy.

It’d help me if you included a LITTLE bit of background for yourself, so I could include that “programmer at an insurance company” attribution, should it back up the text.

Also let me know about your experience with code review. Is it something you use now, but want to improve? Something you’d like to include in your dev process? What difference would it make to get more support from Management for doing code reviews?

Incidentally, if you hate code reviews or just aren’t interested… thanks, but that doesn’t help me write this piece, which does start with the premise that code reviews are valuable. So it’s groovy with me if you don’t find them useful, but I’ll be ignoring that input for the purposes of this white paper.

Team Foundation Server Lab Management

As a company, we have committed ourselves to using TFS as a core component of our development environment. At the moment, any automated testing we do is done on the build server and is substantially at a unit test level. I perceive the need to expand this into system testing and therefore deploying onto multiple machines (client, web server, database). To this end, I have started looking at Microsoft Lab Management.

It looks like it has potential, but all the demos I see seem to show a simple build of a single module, deploy and test. Whereas in my company we have multiple teams deploying multiple modules having dependencies between them.

As an example, say a change to a service requires a database change as well. I can get the build of the service to kick off the Lab Management deployment, and I understand that I can add a database deployment script to the Lab Management build but it does not really seemed joined up especially as we start to see Visual Studio SQL Projects that will have their own builds. This is a simple example whereas in real life we may have multiple services and databases that need to be aligned for a complete system deployment.

I suspect I am asking too much of the Lab Management product. Any comments on how you use Lab Management?

All round good guy.

Multi Developers Working On The Same Project

Hi all,

I am a new member to this site and also new to programming. Recently I have been tasked to develop a new application with a group of developers.

I would like to ask if there is any way where all the programmer can work on the same project hosted on a server. Currently we all develop different section of the project on our own laptop and then we copy and paste to compile on the server one by one.

Is there anyway we all can work on the project hosted on the server at once

Any advise and suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Thanks
