Sometimes delivery companies do surprise me ... and sometimes they don't.

Ordered some lead-in stands yesterday, and got a message from the courier early this morning that it would be delivered between 09:08 and 12:08 - what a surprise, it was delivered at 16:20.
But it doesn't surprise me given I live in a week rural location...

Then at 11:00 this morning I placed an order for next day delivery and it was delivered at 20:04 ... that was a surprise as I got an order confirmation 10 minutes becks the courier knocked on the door!
Ì can kinda understand that in a city, but it here?
Why corporate IT must be destroyed

A while back one of the muckety-mucks in our corporate IT sent an email saying we were now required to switch to the new Outlook.

My experience since then is that the new Outlook was written by an amoeba swimming in cheap tequila . You can't arrange the message list like you want. The date format in the list is obnoxiously cute (last week, yesterday afternoon, just in time for tea,...). The folder list can't be ordered except alphabetically. Links in emails can only be created. Clicking on them does nothing. When composing a message you can't edit a link you created. You can't start the new Outlook automatically. The actual executable can't be run via a shortcut in the Startup group, which means you have to start it manually Every. ing. Time. You. Log. In.

I just found out they back-pedaled on the requirement: "Use the new Teams and the old Outlook".

Grrr...
Dune

Greetings & Kind Regards
I just now completed viewing Dune II. It occurred to me two solutions exist which would solve the problem the Fremen have id est the domination of their home world. Neither involves the shedding of blood or war. It is merely a chemistry problem.

[edit Monday, July 22, 2024] Does no one here have an interest in chemistry or is it a trivial and obvious solution.
How do you deal with technical debt?

My development colleague is a strong proponent of getting it done cheap and dirty, and this style incurs a lot of technical debt.
Philosophizing with my compiler

I argued with my compiler by quoting Nietzsche at it: "All things are subject to interpretation - whichever interpretation prevails is a function of power, not truth".

It wasn't impressed. It refused to compile my code.

Apparently my compiler is more powerful than I am.

Maybe I'll see how it feels about Foucault - challenge the grand narratives of C++.

It is one of those days. I'm going to produce weird code.
Maybe a lesser-known computer futurist

As a big DEC fanboi, I often have to quote...
"There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home."
Ken Olsen, president, chairman and founder of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) 1977
(As I did a few moments ago on another thread.)

But earlier this month I read a book by John Kemeny -- creator of BASIC. "Man and the Computer", 1972

He makes some predictions through the year 2000. Some pretty much correct, others not so much.

Mainly he predicts people using teletypes or terminals at home to dial into their networks to work on a dozen or so central computers.

Where he was wrong was that home computers were about to be a reality -- and few people would use a dumb terminal at home.

But still, technology aside, he describes such activities as using a computer to order groceries for home delivery. And E-mail, news reports, etc.

my printer sent me a message "cartridge rans out of paper"

my printer is LexMark (model:MB2236adwe). I just changed its cartridges a month ago.
today it sent a message "cartridge out of ink". I have this laser printer for 10+ years.

I know the cartridge is brand new, does the imaging unit need to be replaced?
